This is one of the first three pieces Morgan carved. The wood is kauri swamp wood, over 25,000 years old, unearthed from a swamp where it was preserved after being buried by volcanic eruptions. The stone is greenstone from the South Island of New Zealand, and is highly valued by Maori people. The shape represents the new fern fronds uncurling, a frequent motif in Maori art.
