Browsing Local Shops
Thursday, 22 July, 2004 by Donna V. Whitmore
We spent most of Thursday in New Plymouth visiting art galleries, museums and art shops. There is so much to see! The artwork of Len Lye was on display at the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery. I must confess I did not know of him, but his art is a delight to see! We also visited Kina NZ Design + Art Space, the Egmont Gallery, the Taranaki Arts Center, Espressions, Hogarth Galleries (Aboriginal and Tribal Art Center) and numerous other shops and galleries.
We saw a lot of Maori art work, which is done in many different mediums, all of which is beautiful and often intricate. I can't wait to go to the "Rock Shop," owned by Morgan, a Maori artist. He works in green stones and creates jewelry and other visual arts.
I think I have finally worked out my first digital story. We will go to a classroom this afternoon to begin work on our stories; up until arriving at Witt, we have not had a place or the equipment to do this. I'm not sure I will find enough pictures for my story, but something will work out!
